It depends on what you mean by do inversion tables work! If you mean will an Inversion Table help you grow taller then I’m afraid the answer is no.

Improving your posture with Pilates is likely to have a bigger impact on how tall you look and no matter how long you hang upside down I’m afraid you’re height is genetically programmed and therefore inversion therapy won’t help you.

If however you’re talking about helping with a number of back, neck and skeletal problems like:

Sacroiliac Joint Problems

Herniated discs (Slipped Disk)

Lower Back Pain (Lumbago)

Neck pain

Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatica

Many more

Then inversion therapy has been shown to help in many cases and is a treatment that you might want to consider before invasive surgery.

Assuming you’ve been cleared by your health professional to use an Inversion Table (there are a few conditions where hanging upside down may not be advised) using one couldn’t be simpler and even a few mins a say can be highly beneficial.

Considering you can buy a decent model for around $300 it makes sense to try Inversion Therapy before anything else.

Don’t be tempted to buy really cheap as you need a model that is strong enough to support you inverted. Saving a few dollars only to injure yourself doesn’t make any sense so a quality product like the Teeter EP-950 or the HBI Premium Inversion table is ideal.

Teeters Inversion Tables are some of the best available on the market today from inexpensive doorway devices all the way up to professional and clinical models.

Lets face it if you want good build quality and an inversion table that is not only safe but will also last you for years it’s going to cost you more than the budget range of tables provided by other manufacturers.

You’d think that by hanging upside down on an Inversion Table would make you grow taller and for a short time it probably will.

When you hang upside down the space between each of your discs will get bigger allowing the disc itself to rehydrate and plump itself up therefore filling the gap.

So in theory you would get taller except once you come off the table and stand upright the spine becomes fully loaded once more and any increase in height is mostly completely negated.

However Inversion Therapy could help you maintain your current height by helping to prevent the shrinkage caused by gravity over your lifetime.

A better way to look taller is to correct any poor posture you may already have like slouching and looking down.

Pilates for example if practiced regularly will not only make you look taller but also helps to increase your strength, flexibility and total body stability as well as mobilising your spine.

So although Inversion Therapy has been shown to be beneficial it hasn’t been shown to be able to make people permanently taller.

Inversion Table Therapy has been known to help with back pain for many years but it’s only recently that research has confirmed that hanging up-side down can for some spinal conditions help not only to relieve pain but also acts as a preventative.

Inversion therapy is claimed to be able to help the spine by:

Allowing the discs to re-hydrate

Helping with spine realignment

Helps to relax the spinal muscles

Reducing pressure on discs

By inverting ourselves on a specially designed inversion table either by a few degrees or totally inverted we can relieve the pressure on our discs and allow the spine to take up a more natural alignment. By reversing the effects of gravity the spine, it’s muscles and ligaments are gently stretched allowing your spine to de-compress.

There are many different types of Inversion table on the market today from the very inexpensive (less that $80) to the professional variety costing many hundreds of dollars.

As always buying the cheapest isn’t always the best idea as an accident whilst hanging upside down could cause you an injury. Your Inversion Table should be sturdy, hold you firmly in position and be able to invert you safely without supervision.

Although Inversion Tables are considered safe for any normal healthy person before you decide to purchase one please visit your health professional and get the OK first. There are certain medical conditions like high blood pressure that could make using an Inversion Table potentially dangerous. Only your Physician will be able to tell you if it’s safe so please get the all clear before deciding to hanging yourself upside down
